Pompeii – A breakthrough in the investigation into the devastating fire at the judicial textile waste depot on Via Spielli, on the border between Pompeii and Scafati, which ravaged the Marian city in the summer of 2025.
This morning, officers from the Pompeii Public Safety Commissioner executed a precautionary detention order against a man deemed to be a serious suspect in the crime of arson. The order was issued by the preliminary investigations judge of the Torre Annunziata Court, at the request of the local Public Prosecutor's Office.
The fire and the environmental emergency
The events date back to August 6, 2025, when an area of approximately 3.640 square meters was engulfed in flames. The fire severely damaged a complex of 13 warehouses, which stored large quantities of textile waste, materials already under judicial seizure.
The extinguishing operation was extremely complex: the extremely high temperatures prevented rescuers from approaching the site for days. Only thanks to the tireless work of numerous firefighting teams was the emergency declared over on August 14, over a week after the fire began.
The investigations: cameras and wiretaps
The investigators' work, coordinated by the Oplonti Prosecutor's Office, relied on technological tools and meticulous analysis. Footage from the area's video surveillance systems was crucial, allowing them to reconstruct the suspect's movements.
Alongside the videos, extensive technical monitoring and interception activities provided the evidence necessary to trigger the precautionary measure. Investigators speak of "serious indications of guilt" that outline a very specific profile of responsibility regarding the malicious nature of the event.
Destination Poggioreale
After the usual formalities at the police station, the arrested man was transferred to the "G. Salvia" prison in Naples-Poggioreale. Investigators are now examining the possible involvement of third parties or the existence of a mastermind behind what was one of the most serious arson attacks of the season.
