Three months after the traffic accident that killed State Police patrol leader Aniello Scarpati, 46-year-old Ciro Licenziato, from Portici, who was involved in the legal proceedings surrounding the officer's death, was sent to prison.
The man was arrested by officers from the Portici-Ercolano police station on charges of possession of narcotics for the purpose of dealing.
The control and the first seizure
The turning point came on the night between Friday and Saturday, shortly after midnight, when a patrol car from the Flying Squad intercepted Licenziato's car on Via Armando Diaz. Two other people were in the vehicle. The officers, who already knew the man's name, conducted a thorough search.
During the personal search, 730 euros in cash and approximately seven grams of cocaine, already divided into doses, were found, an element that immediately triggered the hypothesis of drug dealing and a subsequent house search.
The cellar and the load of cocaine
The investigation led the police to a cellar owned by the suspect, located in the nearby municipality of San Giorgio a Cremano. Here, the seizure became even more significant: inside two safety deposit boxes, they found ten blocks of cocaine weighing approximately one and a half kilograms, along with precision scales and packaging materials.
According to investigators, the substance is highly pure, likely destined for the drug dealing network operating between Portici, Ercolano, and the Vesuvian area, particularly in the nightlife districts. Further investigations are underway to identify the suppliers and clarify whether Licenziato was acting independently or on behalf of third parties.
Connections to the fatal accident
The arrest isn't an isolated incident. On the night of the October 31st accident on Viale Europa in Torre del Greco, precision scales had already been found inside the SUV driven by Tommaso Severino—who was later arrested for aggravated vehicular homicide. This detail immediately drew investigators' attention to a possible connection to drug use and trafficking.
The fired man was aboard the vehicle that struck a police cruiser, killing Aniello Scarpati instantly and seriously injuring Officer Ciro Cozzolino. The man escaped unharmed and fled before help arrived. He clearly had something to hide.
Investigations into drug trafficking
Following the drug seizure, Ciro Licenziato was arrested and transferred to prison. He is now awaiting a validation hearing before the preliminary investigations judge, scheduled for tomorrow.
The two men who were with him at the time of the check were found not to have been involved and were released. However, they will be questioned again to determine whether they were aware of Licenziato's drug dealings. The investigation continues to reconstruct the entire drug supply chain and the 46-year-old's role in the alleged drug supply and distribution system.
The aim is to understand who the man was selling drugs to, their clientele, and, above all, to reach the suppliers and any possible links to local clans.
