Fourth – Gennaro Sommella, 84, a Phlegraean retiree, was crushed to death by a tree he was felling for firewood on a farm on Via Masullo. His body was found last night after hours of searching in vain.

The alarm and the discovery

The man had left home on Tuesday morning to collect firewood. When he hadn't returned for lunch, his family began calling his cell phone, which rang unanswered all day. The alarm was raised that evening, culminating in the dramatic discovery: Sommella lying on the ground, crushed by the bush, with the chainsaw still beside him.

Medical intervention and seizure of the body

Emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene and were only able to confirm the death from chest compressions. The body was seized by the public prosecutor on duty, pending an autopsy to determine the circumstances and exact time of death. Carabinieri officers from the Quarto station have begun an investigation to reconstruct the accident.

It's very sad what happened to this elderly man, but I don't understand how such a serious accident could happen while chopping firewood. Workplace safety is important and shouldn't be overlooked.
