Malicious acts on high-speed lines: trains between Rome, Naples, and Florence delayed by up to 90 minutes.
Burned cables and damage to railway infrastructure: widespread disruption on the high-speed line. Investigations are underway into three separate incidents.

Sabotage on the high-speed lines

This morning saw significant disruption on the high-speed rail network between Rome, Naples, and Florence, where traffic was slowed due to at least two confirmed malicious acts and a third incident still under investigation. The announcement comes from Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, which reports targeted damage to traffic management infrastructure.

Damaged cables between Salone and Labico

The first instance of sabotage was identified on the Rome–Naples high-speed line, in the section between Salone and Labico. The Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) operations room detected an anomaly that prompted technicians to intervene on-site: they found tampering with the tunnels housing the traffic control cables, with evident signs of burning. The damage directly impacted the smooth running of traffic.

Disruptions also on the Rome-Florence route: diversions and checks

A second malicious act was reported on the Rome-Florence high-speed line, between Tiburtina and Settebagni, resulting in diversions and train delays. A further incident, between Capena and Gallese, is still under investigation.

The judicial authorities are currently investigating the situation. Only after the investigations are completed will RFI technicians be able to intervene and fully restore the damaged infrastructure.

Delays of up to an hour and a half: six trains over 60 minutes

The impact on service resulted in delays of up to 90 minutes, with at least six trains scheduled for approximately one hour longer. At Rome Termini station, a Frecciarossa train from Milan was delayed an hour and a half. Trains arriving from Naples and Mantua, operated by various railway companies, were also affected. Numerous other trains experienced delays of between 20 and 30 minutes.

AV Network Vulnerable: Sabotage Investigations

The nature of the damage—burning cables and access to technological tunnels—suggests deliberate actions aimed at targeting critical nodes of the high-speed network. Investigators are working to determine the circumstances and responsibilities behind the incidents, while the impact on rail traffic along the main national network remains significant.
