Naples – The day after the devastating fire that ravaged the cultural heart of Via Chiaia, the toll is heavy, and the emergency is far from over. This morning, at the Prefecture's Civil Protection Office, Prefect Michele di Bari presided over the Relief Coordination Center to review the legacy of debris, rubble, and families far from home.

Although the main fire was extinguished, the night brought back images of terror: some flames rekindled beneath the piles of debris and behind the stage. The firefighters' work is a race against time, made difficult by the nature of the materials—predominantly wood—and the instability of the structure.

During yesterday's operations, three firefighters were injured by the collapse of a platform; the most serious of these sustained fractures to his wrist and ankle. Clearing operations are currently proceeding with extreme caution to ensure the safety of the workers.

Damage toll: 26 people out of their homes

The surveys carried out by the Municipality of Naples outline a critical scenario for the building: 28 real estate units are affected, including the theater itself, nine commercial premises, and 18 units on the upper floors (offices and apartments).

The most dramatic figure concerns residents: 26 people were forced to abandon their homes. While many are waiting for the completion of the safety measures to assess whether they are fit for habitation, the damage to three apartments already appears to be extremely severe. To support the evacuees, the administration has set up an information booth directly on Via Chiaia, while access to the building's stairwells remains strictly prohibited.

Waiting for the Arpac surveys

On the environmental front, ARPA Campania has positioned a high-volume sampler in Piazza dei Martiri to monitor air quality and the presence of pollutants. The results will be released Friday morning, but initial reassurance comes from the ORSA data: yesterday's strong winds blew the fumes toward the sea, limiting the direct impact on the town. Fortunately, the adjacent building of Santa Maria della Mercede does not appear to have suffered any damage.

Surveillance and traffic

While the Municipal Police manage the difficult pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the area, law enforcement officers are patrolling the perimeter to prevent looting. The area remains partially cordoned off: an open wound in the heart of the city, which is waiting to see when reconstruction can begin.

It's truly sad to see what happened on Via Chiaia, but I hope the authorities do everything they can to help those who lost everything. Safety must be a priority, and the damage is truly extensive.
