Sant'Antimo – Moments of pure terror erupted in a downtown apartment, where a family dinner turned into a nightmare of beatings and threats. Shortly before 9:00 PM last night, the local Carabinieri station received an anonymous call for help.

Within minutes, a patrol reached the reported address. It wasn't the attacker who opened the door, but the victim: a 54-year-old woman, the same age as her husband, visibly distraught and showing clear signs of recent violence. She had bruises on her neck, a swollen face from the slaps, bleeding lips, and injuries to her back.

The sleeves of her sweater were stained with blood, which the woman had tried to wipe away, perhaps in an attempt to compose herself or maintain some vestige of dignity in front of the soldiers. The scene in the house spoke volumes: overturned furniture, shattered dishes, damaged furnishings everywhere.

The victim told the Carabinieri a story that, unfortunately, isn't new: years of abuse, suffered not only by her but also by the couple's two children, now adults. Last night's episode was reportedly yet another, unleashed during what should have been a normal dinner, but instead became yet another opportunity to vent anger and frustration in an atmosphere dominated by heavy alcohol breath.

While the woman attempted to clear up the mess, the officers headed to the ground floor of the same building, where the man—a 54-year-old worker—had taken refuge in his brother's apartment. There, they found him clearly intoxicated.

He did not resist: he was arrested on charges of domestic abuse and transferred to Poggioreale prison. The victim refused immediate transport to the hospital, but may be admitted there in the next few hours for treatment. Local social services were alerted to the scene and will monitor the family to offer support and assess possible protective measures.

The episode is part of the dramatic picture of domestic violence that continues to affect many families, often hidden behind the walls of the home and aggravated – as in this case – by alcohol abuse.
