SAVIANO. One of the historic symbols of the fight against marshland and the rebirth of the area has, amidst widespread silence, become a dumping ground for garbage. The Regio Lagno, the ancient artificial canal built during the Bourbon era to reclaim the land and secure the area, is in a state of total abandonment, transformed into an illegal open-air landfill.
The most critical section is located on Via Tappia Furignano. Here, along the riverbed, all kinds of waste lie: from plastic and household bags to bulky waste, and even piles of materials traced back to the local Carnival floats. This situation, in addition to seriously degrading the urban landscape, jeopardizes the canal's hydraulic functionality, increasing the risk of flooding during heavy rains.
The alarm was raised by Francesco Emilio Borrelli, MP for the Green and Left Alliance, who inspected the site following complaints from residents. "We are faced with yet another environmental disaster affecting a historic infrastructure," Borrelli stated. "It is unacceptable that the Regio Lagno has been reduced to an illegal landfill, a symbol of incivility and lack of oversight. An area that should be protected and maintained has been abandoned to waste."
The parliamentarian announced his intention to proceed swiftly. "I will formally report the situation to the relevant authorities," he explained, "requesting urgent cleanup and, above all, the identification of those responsible. It is no longer tolerable that entire areas are held hostage by lawlessness and indifference. We need inspections, sanctions, and a serious maintenance plan. Protecting the environment means protecting the health and dignity of its citizens." Meanwhile, local residents are clamoring for prompt action to restore dignity to a place that today represents an open wound in the heart of the region.
