Il Treasure of San Gennaro, preserved in the Cathedral of Naples, is one of the richest and most spectacular ecclesiastical collections in the world: in addition 21.000 pieces among jewels, goldsmiths, silverware, relics and precious fabrics.

This collection is not simply a collection of valuable artefacts: it is the result of secular donations from popes, sovereigns, aristocrats and ordinary believers, a heritage that reflects the deep devotion to the patron saint of Naples. Inside the Treasury Chapel are works by highly prestigious artisans, including silver statues, religious ornaments, and masterpieces of Baroque art.

Among the most famous objects are:

  • The jeweled miter of San Gennaro, with almost 4.000 precious stones (diamonds, emeralds, rubies) which make it one of the most sumptuous objects in the world.
  • The historical series, started in 1679 and enriched for over two centuries with stones and gifts donated by monarchs, popes and dignitaries.
  • Silver busts, sacred silverware and historical relics that testify to the evolution of Neapolitan religiosity and goldsmith art.

The value of these treasures has never been officially estimated in economic terms, but some unofficial estimates speak of extraordinarily high figures, even of the order of hundreds of millions of euros for the most precious objects.

Since 1975, after an attempted theft of the Camorra, the treasure is guarded with very sophisticated security measures, including a system of “fingerprinting” of the gems to track them even if they were removed from their original mountings.

The Miracle of San Gennaro: Faith, Tradition, and Collective Ritual

At the centre of popular devotion linked to the Treasure of San Gennaro there is the famous Miracle of San Gennaro, or the alleged liquefaction of the blood of the saint, which occurs three times a year in the Cathedral of Naples: the Saturday before the first Sunday of May, the September 19th (day of the martyrdom of the saint) and the 16th December (feast of San Gennaro).

Tradition has it that the ampoules containing the saint's supposed blood, kept in the Treasury Chapel, change from a solid to a liquid state in the sight of the faithful and during solemn religious ceremonies. Every time the blood melts is welcomed as a sign of blessing and good wishes for the city, while failure to liquefy is considered, in popular belief, a bad omen.

Recent news confirms that even in the 2025 the miracle repeated itself with great participation of faithful and tourists: the blood liquefied on the occasion of the events in May and on 19 September, and again the 16th December, arousing intense emotions among those present.

This religious event draws hundreds of thousands of people each year to the historic center of Naples, transforming the ritual into a moment of profound social as well as spiritual communion.

The cultural heritage and the connection with Naples

The history of Treasure of San Gennaro and its miracle It spans nearly a millennium of faith, art, and popular tradition. The relics date back to the 4th century, when the bishop of Benevento, martyred in 305 AD, became a central figure of Christian worship in Campania. A woman, according to legend, collected his blood in two vials that have since become the centerpiece of the annual rite.

The treasure has become a symbol not only of religious devotion, but also of Neapolitan collective identity, a shared heritage that unites history, art, and civic memory.

Even today, the city celebrates these traditions with events, processions, and celebrations that involve not only Catholics but visitors of all nationalities, making the Treasure and Miracle of San Gennaro a cultural phenomenon without borders.

Il Treasure of San Gennaro It is much more than a collection of jewels and precious objects: it is an archive of faith, history and devotion that runs through the memory of an entire city. Miracle of San Gennaro, with its evocative and controversial liquefaction of blood, represents the beating heart of a popular tradition that continues to unite religion, folklore and a sense of belonging.

The Treasure of San Gennaro is a strange subject, described very beautifully but also too mysterious, it seems that the pieces are many and precious but people do not understand well how the miracle works and the blood often liquefies, the ceremony attracts tourists and citizens, it remains an ancient and shared symbol
