San Paolo Bel Sito – A dead mouse was found in a pot intended for school lunches. This was reportedly found around lunchtime at the "G. Costantini" Comprehensive School, shortly before the elementary school students were served lunch.
The report was made by the school management, who requested the intervention of the Carabinieri of the local station.
According to reports, the animal was noticed by a worker from the company responsible for the canteen service. The meal was not distributed: no students consumed any food related to that preparation.
The alarm before the distribution
The incident apparently occurred "close to" the time of serving, a detail that weighs in two ways: on the one hand, it indicates that the "visual" checks worked, avoiding consequences; on the other, it raises questions about the chain of previous checks (receipt of goods, storage, preparation, covering and storing pots, access to the premises).
Local Health Authority (ASL) and NAS (National Health Authority) take action: everything is under seizure.
The competent local health authority (Marigliano) and the Naples Anti-Adulteration and Health Unit (NAS) were activated. The animal was found dead, and, according to reports, the pot and related material were seized to allow for health and investigative checks.
Vigilance, responsibility, and the shadow of sabotage
The underlying question is inevitable: how is it possible that a foreign body of that size ends up in a pot intended for children?
There are currently two possible causes, which cannot be ruled out a priori, but they will have different weights until the results of the investigations are available:
Hygienic-organizational deficiencyUncontrolled access, premises inadequately protected from pests, incompletely implemented HACCP procedures, management errors (pots left unattended, unused lids, vulnerable loading/unloading areas). Responsibility here is "systemic": contractor (self-monitoring), school (supervision of service performance), contracting body (specification review and inspections).
Hypothesis of intentional actSabotage is only a possibility if concrete evidence emerges (forced or incompatible access with normal operations, anomalies in the seals/routes, witness statements, previous conflicts). In these cases, the key question becomes who had the physical opportunity to introduce the animal and at what stage.
In every scenario, the most delicate aspect remains vigilance: luck (or the operator's promptness) prevented the meal from reaching the children, but prevention should prevent such a situation from arising again.
What is expected from the investigations?
The findings of the Local Health Authority (ASL) and the NAS (National Health Authority) must clarify at least: the condition of the premises and the presence of pests, traceability and route of the meal, HACCP and sanitization records, methods of storing and handling pots and pans, and any known non-compliances. This will determine any fines, regulations, suspensions of service, and reports to the judicial authorities.
