A torchlight procession will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, February 19th, at 6:30 pm in Piazza Duomo in Nola in solidarity with little Domenico, the boy just over two years old who underwent a heart transplant in Naples that later proved to be damaged.
The initiative will begin at the city's cathedral, where the child's family lives, and will be attended by the parents and lawyers, as well as citizens and associations who have been following the child's medical situation with concern in recent weeks.
The hope of an alternative therapy
"The very faint hope is that an alternative therapy may emerge that can restore the child to parameters that will make him eligible for transplant again," said Francesco Petruzzi, the family's lawyer.
The reference is to the possibility, even temporary, of mechanical cardiac support or other therapeutic solutions that can stabilize the child's condition while waiting for a new transplant.
Doubts about the timing of medical decisions
The lawyer raises questions about the clinical management in the weeks following the first surgery: "There were days of darkness. We wonder why this extended team evaluated certain options only 60 days later, rather than a month earlier, when the conditions were more stable and might have even allowed for the transplantation of a mechanical heart."
According to Petruzzi, analyzing the medical records will be crucial: "We'll only be able to understand this by examining the heart team and clinical monitoring reports. If it turns out the situation was already extremely serious from the beginning, we'll take note of it.
But if the parameters indicated different criticalities, then we must ask ourselves why alternative solutions were not sought that, with current technology, could have avoided the progressive suffering of the lungs, kidneys, and liver."
Waiting and solidarity
The torchlight procession in Nola is part of a climate of strong emotional involvement surrounding the story of little Domenico, while the family remains confident in the possibility of new therapeutic options and a complete reconstruction of the medical decisions made during the treatment process.
