Naples. The stalemate over the future of the "Spolette" military plant in Torre Annunziata has been resolved, at least temporarily. This morning, the Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, chaired a crucial roundtable discussion to address employee unrest, concerned about the Ministry of Defense's plans to decommission the plant.
The meeting was attended by the top management of the Defense Industries Agency (AID), the management of the Torre del Greco site, and trade union delegations from Fp Cgil, Cisl Fp, and Uilpa.
Unions raise alarm: "Workers are left in the dark."
At the heart of the dispute was the Ministry of Defense's decision to permanently close the historic plant. The unions expressed grave concern, denouncing a chronic lack of information on the workforce's future. The delegates' concerns related not only to the loss of a local industrial presence, but also to the lack of clear contractual guarantees for the employees.
The return plan: heading towards Castellammare
The Defense Industries Agency (AID) poured cold water on the situation. During the meeting, the agency outlined the terms of its reorganization plan, confirming that the closure of Torre Annunziata will not result in traumatic redundancies. The administration announced the transfer of workers to the nearby Castellammare di Stabia plant.
AID also stated its willingness to maintain an open dialogue with the social partners to discuss the implementation of contractual provisions and best manage the logistical and operational transition phase.
The protest has been suspended while awaiting the national meeting.
The reassurances received at the Prefecture have led to a partial truce. Given the new meeting scheduled for tomorrow at the Central Administration in Rome, where discussions will continue with the national trade unions, the local unions have decided to suspend the cooling-off period.
The future of the workers at the "Spolette" plant thus remains dependent on the outcome of the national negotiations, but moving to the Castellammare di Stabia shipyards appears to be, at the moment, the only way to avoid an employment crisis in the Vesuvian area.

It seemed like a neutral update to me; however, there remains a lot of confusion: the workers have never been well informed, the transfer to Castellammare could cause many logistical and family problems; the Prefect and the AID are talking but the contractual guarantees are not clear, let's hope that the national roundtable sheds light on the matter.
