Agropoli – An ordinary morning turned tragic just steps from the Istituto Clinico Mediterraneo. On Via Giambattista Vico, a car carrying an elderly couple plunged several meters into the air, landing in a private parking lot below. The driver, a man in his eighties from Santa Maria di Castellabate, was left without any rescue.
The dynamics of the crash
According to initial investigations by law enforcement, the vehicle was traveling along the roadway when it suddenly crashed through the guardrail and the internal fence. After plunging into the void, the car violently crashed into a parked car in the private lot. The impact was fatal for the elderly driver, who died instantly in the wreckage. His wife, seated next to him, was pulled alive by emergency responders: despite her serious injuries, she was conscious when she was rushed to the hospital.
Rescue and safety
Emergency medical services and the fire department responded promptly to the scene of the accident, their work playing a crucial role in freeing the bodies from the crumpled passenger compartment. The accident also caused several gas pipes to burst in the parking lot, necessitating the intervention of technicians to secure the area. Municipal Police officers and Carabinieri officers from the Agropoli Company conducted investigations to determine the cause of the fatal flight.
Illness and traffic chaos possible
Investigators are primarily considering the possibility of a sudden illness: the 80-year-old may have fainted while driving near the clinic, completely losing control of his vehicle. Investigations are ongoing to rule out any mechanical failures. Traffic has been severely impacted: traffic on Via Pio X was completely paralyzed for hours while rescue operations and debris removal were carried out.
