A child's heart transplant in Naples: the prosecutor's office acquires documents; technical consultants are arriving.

Two doctors have been suspended from Monaldi Hospital after the parents filed a complaint. The organ was apparently damaged by ice during transport from Bolzano. Negligent injury and failure to perform official duties are suspected.

Naples – The Carabinieri of Nola and Marigliano have acquired all the clinical and diagnostic documentation relating to the heart transplant performed on December 23rd on a child from Nola at the Monaldi Hospital in Naples.

The investigation, coordinated by the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office (Section VI specializing in "Work and Professional Misconduct" under the leadership of Deputy Prosecutor Antonio Ricci), aims to shed light on a matter that raises disturbing questions about the procedures followed during the operation.

Technical consultants to evaluate the procedures

Investigators have not ruled out soon handing over the case to specialized consultants who will verify whether all phases of the operation—from the heart removal in Bolzano to packaging, transportation, and implantation—were carried out in compliance with current protocols.

This is a crucial step in determining any responsibilities in the chain that led to the operation on the little patient.

The organ damaged by the ice

According to the complaint filed by the child's parents, the heart intended for transplant was improperly stored during the transfer. Excessive ice froze some parts of the organ, making it unsuitable for implantation.

Despite this, the operation was performed anyway because the child had already been surgically prepared: the protocols require that once the organ has been removed and the recipient has been prepared, the transplant must be completed.

Two doctors suspended, transplant service closed

Monaldi Hospital responded yesterday by suspending two doctors involved in the incident and simultaneously suspending its pediatric transplant service. These measures demonstrate the gravity of the situation and the need to fully investigate the facts.

The first suspects could be added soon. Currently, the Naples Prosecutor's Office is suspecting the healthcare professionals who performed the delicate operation as charges of negligent assault and failure to perform official duties.

This is a very complicated situation, and I think the authorities should be more careful how they handle these cases. We hope that clarity will be shed on what happened, because a child's life is very important and must not be put at risk.
