Another scam against an elderly woman, another story of broken trust. It happened in San Bartolomeo in Galdo, in Sannio, where a 45 year old woman, resident in the province of Naples, was arrested by the Carabinieri after having carried out a scam using the tried and tested “fake nephew” technique.
The scam began with a phone call to the victim. On the other end, an excited voice, introducing itself as that of a nephew in need, asked for money for urgent payments to be made at the local post office. Faced with the elderly woman's inability to move, the trap was sprung with a ready-made solution: a supposed employee, presented as a courtesy from the office, would come by to collect the money.
Shortly thereafter, the woman appeared at the door, successfully gaining the victim's trust with her kind and reassuring manner. Within minutes, she had all the available cash, several family jewels, and a watch handed over, taking not only a loot exceeding six thousand euros but also the most cherished memories of a lifetime. Then, she slowly and seemingly calmly exited, with a farewell that sealed the deception.
Only later did the elderly woman tell her family what had happened, who immediately called the police. The search began immediately, and the officers quickly located the getaway car. The vehicle was stopped near San Marco dei Cavoti: the woman remained behind the wheel, while her accomplice managed to get out of the car and disappear into the countryside, disappearing without a trace.
The stolen jewelry and watch were recovered from inside the vehicle and returned to their rightful owner. The arrest put an end to the scammer's activities, but the investigation continues to locate her accomplice and clarify any other similar incidents.
