Five attempted scams targeting elderly people were foiled by Carabinieri officers from the Avellino Provincial Command in various towns in the Calore Valley. Once again, the criminals attempted to use the now-familiar "fake relative in trouble" technique, but the alertness of the potential victims and the swift intervention of law enforcement foiled the scheme.

The calls came to the homes of elderly residents in Venticano, Pietradefusi, and Montefusco. On the other end, a frantic voice described a relative involved in a serious problem, often an accident or an urgent legal matter, and demanded the immediate delivery of cash and valuables to a representative who would shortly arrive at the door.

This time, however, something went wrong for the scammers. Some of the elderly people contacted sensed the scam and called 112. Within minutes, four Carabinieri patrols converged on the area, securing the affected areas, effectively preventing the criminals from carrying out their thefts.

Cornered by the presence of the military, the group decided to give up and flee, disappearing before reaching the victims' homes. This incident confirms the importance of prevention and citizen cooperation, especially when it comes to crimes targeting the most vulnerable segments of the population.

It's good news that the Carabinieri intervened in time to stop the scam attempts, but it's important for older people to always be vigilant and not believe everything they hear on the phone. Caution is key.
