Carabinieri Forestry Unit raided Solofra, in the heart of the Irpinia tanning district, to stem pollution from the Sarno River. As part of a targeted control plan to protect one of Europe's most polluted waterways, the military seized a local tannery engaged in leather processing and refining.
During the inspection, investigators found that the plant was operating completely without the required permits. Specifically, the company lacked permits for atmospheric emissions and, even more seriously, for the disposal of industrial wastewater, which was discharged directly into the public sewer system without any preliminary treatment.
In addition to the wastewater issue, the Carabinieri conducted a comprehensive survey of the hazardous waste present within the facility. They identified and seized 150 square meters of materials classified as hazardous. These included large quantities of waste oils and chemicals used in the tanning process, substances with a high environmental impact if released.
Upon completion of the operations, the company owner, a 54-year-old entrepreneur living in the area, was reported to the Avellino Public Prosecutor's Office for alleged crimes related to illegal waste management and the unauthorized discharge of industrial wastewater. Investigations are continuing to determine any potential co-responsibility and the precise environmental impact of the illegal activity on the Sarno River basin.
