Tense moments erupted yesterday evening in the province of Naples, where a team from the National Fire Brigade was attacked during a rescue operation. Firefighters from the Castellammare di Stabia detachment were fighting a truck fire in the municipality of Santa Maria la Carità when they were surrounded by several people and attacked while working.

According to the Conapo union, some workers suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The incident was reported by the union's provincial secretary for Naples, Antonio Antonelli, who described it as "extremely serious" and "a cowardly act against those who serve to protect public safety." According to the union representative, attacking emergency responders "is an attack on the State and jeopardizes the effectiveness of rescue operations."

Conapo expressed its full solidarity with the personnel involved, calling for the immediate identification and swift prosecution of those responsible. The union also urged the prefect to intervene and adopt concrete prevention and protection measures to ensure greater safety for operational teams, especially during operations considered high-risk.

"It is no longer tolerable," Antonelli concludes, "that those who wear a uniform are exposed to violence while carrying out their duties. Immediate responses and effective action are needed to prevent similar incidents from recurring."

This is worrying news; I was hoping it would be different. Firefighters should be protected, but it doesn't seem to me that responsibility has been immediately established, and we need to intervene with serious and concrete measures. Don't over-politicize; we need prevention, training, and more effective controls.
