Moments of pure terror this morning in the heart of Vomero. A sudden fire, sparked by a parked scooter, transformed a quiet Saturday morning into a nightmare of fire and smoke in front of the famous "Bar Flanagan."
The flames, violent and immediate, left no escape for the two-wheeled vehicle and spread with disarming speed to the car parked nearby: not just any car, but the famous vintage Volkswagen Beetle, a true icon of the venue and a visual landmark for the neighborhood. The car was completely destroyed.
The intervention of the military and the balconies licked by fire
The plume of black smoke and high flames dangerously licked the balconies of the homes above, sparking panic among residents and business owners in the area. In those frantic moments, the first to respond were the military personnel engaged in Operation "Safe Streets," stationed in nearby Piazza Fuga.
Armed with fire extinguishers, the soldiers attempted to contain the blaze to prevent the situation from escalating further, acting as the first, essential barrier to the emergency.
The controversy over the delays: "There was a near-tragedy."
The issue was raised by a report sent to the Green Left MP, Francesco Emilio Borrelli. A citizen, an eyewitness to the incident, documented a worrying delay in specialized rescue operations.
"I stayed there for at least 15-20 minutes and didn't see anyone arrive other than the military," the note sent to the parliamentarian reads. For a long period, in fact, there was no sign of the firefighters, leaving the neighborhood in suspense for fear that the fire could engulf residential buildings.
Borrelli's attack: "We need to act quickly."
MP Borrelli took a firm stance, reiterating the alarm about safety in densely populated areas like the hillside. "In a situation like this, with high flames, burning vehicles, and buildings just meters away, specialized rescue teams must arrive as quickly as possible," the MP stated.
The fire could have spread dangerously, affecting homes and causing dramatic consequences. Citizens' safety cannot depend on chance or the goodwill of those on site. An organized, timely, and emergency-level response is needed.
