A nationwide operation against fraud in the wine sector has successfully intercepted large quantities of counterfeit wine. Thanks to the synergy between the ICQRF (Central Inspectorate for the Protection of Quality and the Repression of Fraud in Agri-food Products) and the Special Unit for Goods and Services of the Guardia di Finanza (Italian Financial Police), the initiative called "Vinum Mentitum" was launched in 2024, aimed at exposing illicit practices related to fake DOP and IGP certifications.

Targeted checks along the entire supply chain

The investigation began with a joint analysis of data available to the two administrations, focusing on a crucial sector for Italian agri-food exports, a world leader in trade.

The inspections covered the entire supply chain, from grape harvest to bottling, taking into account critical factors such as adverse weather events, labor shortages, inflation, and plant diseases. The goal was to prevent the use of grapes and musts that did not comply with specifications, originating from areas other than certified ones, thus protecting consumers and the market.

Record seizures and administrative violations

The local branches of the Guardia di Finanza and the ICQRF offices and laboratories conducted inspections throughout Italy, leading to the seizure of approximately 2,5 million liters of falsely labeled DOP and IGP wine, with a total value exceeding €4 million.

Twenty-four entities were reported to the competent administrative authorities. During the investigations, discrepancies between physical inventory and SIAN dematerialized records were discovered, resulting in 59 administrative violations and a minimum revenue loss of €410.000. Furthermore, 11 warnings were issued for correctable irregularities.

Tax irregularities and undeclared work

The inspections also resulted in tax audits: failure to document taxable transactions amounting to over €280.000, failure to pay VAT amounting to approximately €800.000, as well as violations regarding undeclared work and excise duties on wine. This operation confirms the effectiveness of institutional collaboration in defending Made in Italy, designations of origin, and geographical indications, ensuring fair competition and informed choices for consumers.
