Arienzo – A targeted operation by the Penitentiary Police led to the seizure of a smartphone and a narcotic substance inside the Arienzo Prison, in the province of Caserta.
The raid, conducted with the assistance of the Avellino Regional Unit's canine units, confirms the effectiveness of internal intelligence activities and the constant commitment to ensuring legality in penitentiaries.
The intervention and the discovery
The officers, led by Commander Michele Pitti, focused their attention on a specific sleeping room occupied by an inmate. The drug-sniffing dogs' keen sense of smell aroused the officers' suspicions, and they then proceeded to conduct a more thorough search of the cell.
Despite a concealment system described as "ingenious" by law enforcement, the search yielded a perfectly functioning cell phone and a quantity of drugs, most likely hashish or marijuana, likely ready to be sold inside the prison.
Investigations underway and union approval
All the illicit material was seized and made available to the Judicial Authority, which will now coordinate the investigation to trace the origin of the drugs and the phone and to identify any culprits outside the institute.
The operation received praise from the national secretary of SINAPPE (National Union of Penitentiary Police), Luigi Castaldo. In a statement, Castaldo expressed his appreciation for the work done, emphasizing that "despite chronic staffing and resource shortages, the Penitentiary Police continues to ensure safety and legality in prisons with great dedication and professionalism."
Previous
The Arienzo prison, like many other detention facilities in Campania, has long been the focus of attention for problems related to overcrowding and the introduction of prohibited objects. Incidents like today's demonstrate the difficulty of control, but also the promptness with which officers are able to intervene to restore safety conditions.

This seems to me to be correct news. The checks are continuing, but staffing and resources problems remain. The situation in the Ari3nzo prison is complex, but the officers are doing everything they can. Questions remain about how the phone and drugs entered from outside and who should be held accountable.
