A strong earthquake was recorded in the Gulf of Naples during the night between Monday and Tuesday. Seismographs recorded a magnitude 5.9 event at 00:03 AM, with its epicenter located in the body of water between the Campania capital and the island of Capri.
The earthquake, although of significant intensity, did not cause any damage or injuries.
Epicenter between Naples and Capri
According to initial findings, the closest towns to the epicenter are Anacapri, about 8 kilometers away, and the town of Capri, about 10 kilometers away.
The area affected by the earthquake is therefore located in the stretch of sea that separates the island from the capital of Naples, an area where seismic events, although infrequent, can be recorded by monitoring instruments.
The depth has softened the effects
The earthquake's impact was largely limited by the depth of its hypocenter, estimated at around 414 kilometers below the Earth's surface. This characteristic significantly mitigated the impact of seismic waves on the surface.
For this reason, despite the high magnitude, there are currently no reports of damage to buildings or people in the areas closest to the epicenter.
Reports on social media also from Rome and Milan
Despite the limited effects on the ground, the tremor was clearly felt in several areas of the Campania coast. Numerous reports also appeared on social media, with several users reporting feeling the seismic movement even from a great distance.
Some messages, in fact, describe vibrations felt even in Rome and Milan. This phenomenon can occur when the earthquake has a very deep hypocenter: in these cases, seismic waves tend to propagate over greater distances, making the quake noticeable even far from the epicenter.

Interesting news, but it seems to me that the data isn't very clear. The quake seemed strong, but because the hypocenter was deep, there was no damage. Some people say they felt it as far away as Milan and Rome, but that seems exaggerated to me. More thorough monitoring and measurement lines should be done.
