Avellino – The walls of the Avellino prison are no longer an insurmountable obstacle to drug trafficking, but the barrier of human surveillance has withstood the impact. Yesterday evening, a timely operation by the Penitentiary Police prevented a large quantity of narcotics from illegally entering the facility through the use of drones.
The night interception
The infiltration attempt took place under cover of darkness. The remotely piloted drones were spotted flying over the prison perimeter, ready to drop the shipment intended for the inmates. The alert was raised immediately: thanks to constant surveillance, the officers were able to locate the drones before they completed their delivery, seizing both the drones and the drug packages attached to them.
The shadow of organized crime
According to the Uil FP Penitentiary Police, the incident was not the isolated act of an amateur. The nature of the attempted raid suggests the existence of a structured organization.
"We cannot rule out the possibility of a specific plot behind this incident," the union explains, emphasizing how the use of technology has become the new frontier for the smuggling not only of narcotics, but also of cell phones and other prohibited items.
Professionalism versus technological deficiencies
Raffaele Troise, local representative of the union, praised the staff's sense of duty:
"The operation demonstrates the high level of vigilance shown by the officers who operate daily under difficult conditions. Thanks to their vigilance, law and order within the institution was maintained, preventing serious repercussions on internal order."
However, the union emphasizes that the human eye, no matter how trained, cannot be the only defense against increasingly sophisticated aerial threats. The Avellino incident reignites the debate over the need to equip Italian prisons with cutting-edge anti-drone systems and jamming technologies to counter a phenomenon now widespread nationwide.
The investigations
The seized material is now being examined by investigators. Standard procedures have been initiated to reconstruct the exact dynamics of the flight and, most importantly, to identify the pilots who operated the drones from outside, who may have operated from areas adjacent to the prison.
