A prison officer serving at the Cosenza prison has been arrested on corruption charges following an investigation coordinated by the Cosenza Prosecutor's Office. The arrest concerns MF, who was placed under house arrest along with five family members of inmates who, according to investigators, benefited from favors granted within the prison.
The investigation revolves around alleged illicit benefits the officer allegedly granted to several inmates in exchange for the promise or delivery of money and other consideration. Specifically, according to investigators' findings, he allegedly allowed prohibited communications with the outside world and the introduction of unauthorized objects into the prison.
Among the charges being contested is the ability to allow inmates to make video calls in excess of the number allowed by regulations. The officer, according to the prosecution, also allegedly introduced narcotics into the facility and turned a blind eye to the presence of cell phones and SIM cards among the inmates.
In addition to the officer, the preliminary investigations judge ordered house arrest for five people believed to be involved in the favor scheme: Emanuela Pezzi, Daniela Mira Rostas, Idolo Iuele, Rosario Paolo Furno, and Chiara Debora Maria Falcone. Another suspect was ordered to remain in his municipality of residence and report to the judicial police.
The investigation was conducted by the Central Investigative Unit of the Penitentiary Police, specifically the Calabria regional unit based in Catanzaro, with the support of the Penitentiary Police Department and the collaboration of the Campania regional unit based in Naples. During the investigation, several seizures of drugs and cell phones were made within the prison, which helped strengthen the prosecution's case.

The arrested officer's actions are still unclear. The investigation is confusing, and it will take time to fully understand the situation. Citizens want explanations. It is hoped that justice will do its job and those responsible will be identified. However, a sense of distrust remains in the prison system and its internal procedures.
