Salerno – There will be no stadium for the foreseeable future for 29 ultras involved in the urban warfare that broke out last October along the A2 highway. The State Police have issued bans (daspo) orders to Casertana and Catania fans, deemed responsible for serious disturbances that transformed a stretch of highway into a veritable battlefield.
The ambush and the roadblock
The events date back to a tense Sunday, when the two sets of fans met by chance (or in a planned encounter) along the arterial road that connects Southern Italy. On one side, the Campania supporters, returning from the away game in Picerno; on the other, the Etna fans, heading to Sicily after the match played in Giugliano.
According to the Salerno DIGOS (Special Operations Unit) reconstruction, the two groups—with their faces covered and armed with sticks, belts, and smoke bombs—invaded both lanes, completely blocking traffic. The scuffles, which lasted several minutes, not only terrified passing motorists but also caused a dangerous fire in the vegetation adjacent to the road, ignited by the launch of fireworks.
The response of the authorities
The investigation, coordinated by the Salerno Public Prosecutor's Office, has identified the individuals most involved in the unrest. In addition to the criminal charges already filed in recent months, the 29 measures banning access to sporting events represent the hard line adopted by the institutions to punish incidents of violence unrelated to sport.
