Monaldi, after the sit-in, a heated exchange erupted between little Domenico's lawyer and the parents of the children with heart disease.

The Caliendo family's lawyer harshly criticized the demonstration in support of Dr. Oppido, under investigation for the two-year-old's fatal transplant: "It clashes with our composure." The other families' immediate and painful response was: "These insults are unacceptable. This isn't a war between those who have lost a child and those who haven't, but we demand respect and no media trials."

Naples – It's an open wound that divides and sparks discussion, the one that permeates the forecourt of Naples' Monaldi Hospital. On one side, the unbearable mourning for the loss of Domenico Caliendo, the two-year-and-four-month-old boy who died on February 21st after a desperate heart transplant performed before Christmas.

On the other hand, dozens of families expressed their solidarity with the person who performed the operation: the head physician Guido Oppido, currently suspended and under investigation for the child's death.

The sit-in organized this morning by parents of children with heart disease in support of the cardiac surgeon turned, within hours, into a heated verbal clash. A heated exchange pitted the Caliendo family's lawyer, Francesco Petruzzi, against the spontaneous committee of parents who took to the streets.

The lawyer's attack: "A farce that jars with our pain."

The fuse was lit by the words, as sharp as a scalpel, of attorney Petruzzi. For the lawyer, the show of solidarity with the doctor under investigation represents an affront to the mourning of Patrizia, Domenico's mother.

"Patrizia is grieving and doesn't have the strength to intervene," the lawyer began, emphasizing the lack of solidarity she's received. "Seeing mothers—mothers who, fortunately, will be returning to their children this evening—demonstrate in front of the Monaldi Hospital in support of a man under investigation for murder is painful. None of them came to express their condolences for Domenico's death."

Petruzzi's accusations go beyond the emotional level, but extend to harsh criticism of the very appropriateness of the event, which he bluntly calls a "farce."

According to the lawyer, this attitude "is at odds with the composure of Patrizia and this defense, which not only has never had an inappropriate word for the health system as a whole, but has never even dreamed of demonstrating outside a public hospital." The final jab is aimed squarely at the expertise of the doctor at the center of the investigation: "Being an excellent heart surgeon doesn't mean you're not a terrible transplant surgeon, unfortunately."

The parents' response: "We're offended by those who call us clowns, but we know that pain."
The response from the families who took to the streets was immediate. A wave of indignation united the parents present at the sit-in, who rejected the lawyer's accusations outright, clarifying the context—and, above all, the experience—of their protest.

"We are deeply offended by the lawyer's words," they said in a joint statement. "We believe it is unfair and painful that our actions are being dismissed as a 'farce.'" Among the mothers present this morning are women who, sadly, return home to find their children missing."

The parents wish to emphasize that their presence is in no way intended to be disrespectful toward the Caliendo family's tragedy. "We know their pain well and deeply respect it. It can never be a war between those who have lost a child and those who have not, because no mother should have to experience such a tragedy."

Instead, they claim the sit-in is an act of pure gratitude toward a doctor who "in so many cases has given our children their lives back." Rejecting the label of "Stockholm syndrome," the mothers recalled the terror and wait outside the operating rooms: "We all know what it means to entrust a child's life into the hands of a heart surgeon."

No to a media trial: "We await justice."

In addition to defending their own dignity, the protesters leveled specific criticism at the opposing side's communication strategy. They targeted the tone of attorney Petruzzi, accusing him of choosing "the path of public attack," going so far as to speak of voluntary manslaughter before the formal start of the legal process.

"We don't defend anyone regardless," the parents firmly reiterate, shifting the focus of the debate to the legal level. "We only ask for respect, balance, and the presumption of innocence that should apply to everyone. Justice will take its course, and that is the forum that will establish the truth." Their final appeal is against media pillorying: "No one should be turned into a monster before the facts are established, based solely on outright prejudice."

While we wait for the judiciary to clarify the clinical responsibilities for little Domenico's tragedy, Monaldi Hospital remains the epicenter of a story where the right to report collides with the deepest pain.
