Naples – A decisive and coordinated response from the state to regain control of the territory. Following the serious incidents that plagued Naples and its province over the past weekend, Prefect Michele di Bari has convened an emergency meeting of the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Security at the Palazzo di Governo today.
At the table, in addition to the heads of the police force and the municipal councilor Antonio De Jesu, sat the Prosecutor of North Naples, Domenico Airoma, and the representatives of the municipalities of Torre Annunziata, Marano and Arzano.
Task force on the territory and first arrests
The goal is clear: to crack down on drug dealing hubs and restore safety to residents through a plan of "targeted and stringent" interventions. The strategy, shared with the North Naples Prosecutor's Office, calls for a massive increase in police presence in the hinterland's hotspots.
The first results were not long in coming. During the extensive operations ordered in the last few hours, the Carabinieri arrested a man with no criminal record in Arzano: he was found in possession of an illegal firearm. The thorough search of the streets and "hotspots" will continue relentlessly in the coming days, combining investigative and preventive efforts.
The role of social services: the alternative to the "street"
The Prefect of Bari reiterated, however, that repression alone is not enough. Addressing the Special Commissioners of Arzano and Marano, he launched a strong appeal for the strengthening of social inclusion initiatives. The idea is to create a network of "local outposts" that actively involves the Third Sector, private social organizations, and parishes.
"We must offer concrete and ethical alternatives to deviance," is the message from the summit. Promoting a culture of legality is not just an institutional duty, but the only prerequisite for the healthy development of the community, freeing young people from the criminal workforce.
Rain of funds for video surveillance
In addition to the men on the streets, enforcement will also involve technology. During the meeting, the allocation of specific funds under the POC Legalità program, financed by the Ministry of the Interior led by Matteo Piantedosi, was confirmed.
Specifically, approximately €150.000 is being allocated to the Municipality of Arzano and over €173.000 to the Municipality of Marano. These resources will be used exclusively for the installation of new, state-of-the-art video surveillance systems, which will allow for constant and comprehensive monitoring of the area, serving as a deterrent to street crime and providing essential support for investigations.

I initially agree with the idea of tighter controls, but also with the social alternative that must be real; without employment opportunities and support, young people will return to the streets. We hope that the projects are well-coordinated and not just surveillance cameras and fines.
