Naples – She promised that that sea of affection would not be lost. And this morning, Patrizia Mercolino, mother of little Domenico Caliendo, kept her word.
She drove a van to the entrance of Monaldi Hospital, the site of the tragic death of a child who died last weekend after a heart transplant due to a damaged organ.
A van full of memories and solidarity
Under the emotional gaze of passersby and healthcare workers, Patrizia collected one by one the many items left behind over the past few hours: stuffed animals, drawings, letters, and clothes. An outpouring of solidarity and support came not only from adults, but especially from other children, who with their little messages wanted to say goodbye to Domenico and rally around his family.
"I'm going to get all the things they gave my son," she had announced a few days ago. Today, that thought has turned into action. The gifts are now safe and ready for a second life.
«I will wash them carefully: they will go to the little hospitalized patients»
But Patrizia's gesture doesn't stop with the collection. Domenico's mother already has clear ideas about the fate of those gifts, transforming a private tribute into an act of collective generosity.
"I'll take them to the dry cleaners, have them all washed and dried carefully," Patrizia explained, visibly tired but determined. "Then we'll divide them up: one part will go to charity for needy children, and the other part we'll donate to hospitals, because there are so many of them. The other items, however, will become part of our foundation, where they will continue to have a special meaning and value."
The background and the future: a foundation will be born
In recent days, a small incident had shaken the community: some people had taken some stuffed animals from outside the hospital. This gesture had sparked controversy, but today it fades into the background compared to the mother's great display of love.
Domenico's memory, however, will live on beyond these gifts. Patrizia has reiterated her intention to create a foundation dedicated to her son, a solid project to channel solidarity and help other children in need. A seed of hope planted in the depths of pain.
