In 2022 Procida reached a historic milestone by becoming Italian Capital of Culture 2022 with the project Culture does not isolate, an ambitious vision that proposed culture as a lever for social, sustainable, and identity-building development for a small island territory. For the first time in the history of the national recognition, awarded by Ministry of Culture, a small island prevailed over much larger and better-known cities.
An analysis three years later shows that that year was not just a succession of events, but it generated processes and lasting impacts which deserve detailed consideration.
Beyond the Events: Social, Cultural, and Economic Impacts
The project Procida 2022 did not limit himself to a series of shows and performances, but aimed to create a multiplier effect on the territory, involving residents, young professionals, institutions and visitors.
A report dedicated to legacy
Recent evaluation works, such as the Social, cultural and economic impact assessment report presented in autumn 2025, show a systematic snapshot of the effects generated by the title of Capital of Culture: not only attendance numbers, but cultural development methods as social infrastructure.
The report, edited in the context of the Campania Libri 2025 Festival, analyses how Procida has seen:
- Increased cultural organizational capacity and collaboration between public and private entities.
- Strengthening territorial networks, with educational, artistic and social projects involving citizens and professionals.
- Promotion of the inclusion practices linked to knowledge and training events.
An important result is the perception of culture not as simple temporary events, but how permanent process of building social capital.
Conscious tourism and identity: material and immaterial heritage
One of the most discussed aspects in the years following 2022 is the relationship between culture and tourismAlthough the increase in visitors has represented a breath of fresh air for the local economy, it has also stimulated critical reflections, as happens in many Italian areas with strong tourist attractions, on sustainability and quality of life of residents.
Public art and new languages
The original program, with 44 projects and over 150 events spread over approximately 330 days, included:
- Widespread exhibitions, dance shows, cinema, artistic performances, and educational workshops.
- The use of urban and monumental spaces, such as Palazzo d'Avalos, for reconnecting historical heritage and contemporary community.
- Initiatives linked to local traditions reinterpreted in a sustainable and ecological way.
Important exhibitions such as Panorama, a widespread contemporary art exhibition, have transformed entire neighborhoods into open-air galleries, creating bridges between visual art and everyday life.
Cultural identity that persists
Established cultural events such as the literary festival Procida Tells, also hosted by the historic library Nutriments, testify as culture has become an integral part of the island's narrative beyond the 2022 peak.
This type of event, together with the reinterpreted traditional celebrations, has contributed to keeping the attention on culture as a an element of identity and not just a tourist attraction.
Future prospects: sustainability, territorial network and collective vision
The legacy of Procida Capital of Culture also concerns strategies for the futureThe project presented in 2021 was already inspired by concepts such as inclusion, sustainability, and a network of territorial alliances between cultural institutions and civil society.
Culture as a lever for social cohesion
Among the most significant initiatives born during and after the Capital year are:
- Training and university events such as the Partnership for Knowledge, with lectures and workshops at the Conservatorio delle Orfane.
- Focus on environmental and social sustainability, such as climate conventions and green initiatives integrated into the cultural calendar.
A network for the future of small territories
The model of Procida, small, authentic, integrated with history and nature, was taken as national example How a cultural project can become a driver of development. Connecting cultural networks between similar areas, especially islands or smaller villages, could represent a sustainable path for future projects.

I'm very interested in the article, but I find several parts unclear: Procida has been enhanced, but the numbers aren't clear; people seem divided; some say the change has persisted, others that it has vanished; there are new networks, but it's unclear how the projects will function in the long term.
