During targeted prevention operations conducted yesterday, Penitentiary Police officers serving at the Salerno Prison successfully cracked down on the introduction of illicit material into the facility. The operation resulted in the seizure of drugs and a cell phone intended for contact with the outside world.

Initially, staff found and seized two packages containing hashish and cocaine, cleverly hidden in the prison's parking lot. Simultaneously, security officers intercepted a drone carrying two additional packages containing additional narcotics and a mobile device. The illicit cargo was dropped on the facility's sports field or, presumably, in the area adjacent to the bunker classroom.

The applause of OSAPP

Vincenzo Palmieri, OSAPP Regional Secretary, expressed his commendation for the officers' work, emphasizing their sense of duty and the high level of professionalism demonstrated despite operational difficulties. Special praise was given to the Acting Commander and all the staff who, despite limited staffing, ensure daily safety, a prerequisite for detention.

Critical issues and challenges for the penitentiary system

Palmieri emphasized that the operation coincided with initiatives promoted by the management and the Antigone association, aimed at rewarding deserving inmates and promoting health protection. However, the OSAPP Secretary emphasized that if illicit conduct persists and genuine reform is lacking among some inmates, the administration's efforts risk being in vain.

Overcrowding, staff shortages, and the presence of mixed detention systems, according to Palmieri, hinder the achievement of the constitutional purpose of punishment. There is a real risk that, rather than improving, prisoners may be released worse at the end of their sentences.

Request for awards

The OSAPP has announced its intention to propose to the heads of the PRAP (Regional Penitentiary Administration Office) and the DAP (Department of Penitentiary Administration) official recognition for Penitentiary Police personnel. This proposal is based on the numerous enforcement operations, carried out in other circumstances as well, which have helped stop the illegal smuggling of cell phones and drugs, often carried out via drones or airdrops.
