Naples – Automatic speed checks on the roads of Naples and its metropolitan area have been put on hold. In a decision that directly impacts provincial traffic, Prefect Michele di Bari has ordered the immediate suspension of the decrees authorizing the installation and use of unapproved speed cameras, effectively ordering their shutdown.
The regulatory vacuum and the Prefecture's choice
The measure is based on the need to restore order and await new national guidelines. The suspension affects all prefectural authorization decrees issued between 2018 and the summer of 2023 that identified road sections suitable for speed detection without the requirement for immediate reporting.
In fact, the official document issued by the Prefecture states that the institution has:
"It was deemed necessary to await the adoption of the implementing decrees for the Ministerial Decree of 11 April 2024 in order to ensure the uniform application of current legislation, as well as the transparency and legality of administrative action."
Therefore, until further notice, speed enforcement devices in the Naples area will remain deactivated.
The Voice of the Municipalities: The Piano di Sorrento Case
The local authorities immediately confirmed the ban. The mayor of Piano di Sorrento intervened to clarify the situation, explaining the rationale behind the ordinance to residents, pending specific guidance from the Ministry of Transport.
"It has been made clear to us that this measure serves to ensure that every procedure is legitimate, transparent, and that uniform criteria for the installation and use of the devices are respected," the mayor confirmed.
However, the municipal administration clearly reiterated the importance of speed checks to protect motorists, deflecting controversy over those who see these devices as simply a means of "making money": "Know that as soon as there is a regulatory opportunity, we will install any type of system capable of detecting speed in our municipality. If it were possible, I would have done so already. We will do it not to collect fines, but to prevent accidents."
