NAPLES – Tensions erupted this afternoon in Bagnoli, where clashes erupted between law enforcement and activists from the "No America's Cup" network. The protest erupted while the City Council was holding a single-issue session inside the Municipality building, dedicated to work on the former Italsider site and the organization of theAmerica’s Cup.
A group of protesters attempted to approach the building to protest the plans for the international sailing competition. According to reports, some activists attempted to break through the cordon set up by police to protect the area. From there, contact erupted and the situation quickly escalated, with jostling and moments of chaos.
During the clashes, a police officer was injured. The officer suffered a lacerated and contused head wound and was treated for medical treatment. He was given a ten-day prognosis. A protester was arrested and taken to the police station; following investigations, he was charged with assaulting a public official. His status is currently being examined by investigators.
The protest is part of the heated debate surrounding the future of the western part of the city and the impact of the planned developments to host the sporting event. While redevelopment and development were being discussed in the chamber, tensions outside marked a new chapter in the conflict between institutions and some residents opposed to the project.
