Yesterday, a busy afternoon, Corso Umberto I was the scene of a failed escape attempt involving a 20-year-old Gambian citizen with an illegal immigration status. The young man was arrested by the State Police on charges of snatching and resisting arrest.

The watchful eye of an off-duty policeman

It all happened when an officer from the Vicaria-Mercato Police Station, off duty and passing through the central street, noticed a suspicious scene: a young woman was desperately chasing a man clutching a bag, screaming for attention. The immediate realization that it was a theft triggered the officer's reaction, and he immediately set off in pursuit of the fugitive.

The fight and the arrival of strong kidneys

The 20-year-old's escape ended on Via Lavinaio, where the off-duty officer managed to catch up with him and subdue him, though not without difficulty. The thief, in fact, put up vigorous resistance in an attempt to gain his freedom. The timely arrival of his colleagues from the Vicaria-Mercato Police Station, who supported the officer during the critical phase of the arrest, was crucial.

Arrest and return of stolen goods

Once identified and apprehended, officers reconstructed the theft: the 20-year-old had just snatched the girl's purse and disappeared into the crowd. He was then arrested. The stolen goods, fortunately still intact, were immediately recovered and returned to their rightful owner, who was able to reunite with her belongings.
