CASTEL VOLTURNO – They were stealing electricity by connecting directly to the public grid, bypassing the meter. This is what officers from the Castel Volturno station discovered during a territorial patrol, which led to four people being charged with aggravated electricity theft.
The intervention began at several homes in the Caserta municipality, where the Carabinieri, supported by specialized personnel from E-Distribuzione, conducted technical inspections of the systems. The investigations revealed an illegal connection system that allowed the homes to be powered directly from the grid, completely bypassing the consumption metering system.
According to the reconstruction, energy was being withdrawn illegally, thus avoiding recording consumption and paying the related bills. A simple but effective mechanism, it would have guaranteed electricity at zero cost, but it passed the financial burden on the community and the utility company.
Those in trouble included a 42-year-old woman, a 34-year-old man, and a 24-year-old woman, all residents of the same building, as well as another 24-year-old man who lives in a different residence in Castel Volturno and is currently under house arrest. All were charged while at liberty.
The operation is part of the efforts to combat property crimes and conduct that impacts public services. Further investigations are underway to quantify the amount of energy stolen and the overall extent of the damage.
