What was supposed to be a routine traffic check turned into a tragedy that shocked the eastern suburbs of Rome. A family—a father, mother, and son—lost their lives in a violent accident on Via Collatina, following a chase between police and a getaway car.

According to an initial investigative reconstruction, it all began in the Quarticciolo area, where a Carabinieri patrol had ordered a suspicious vehicle to stop. The driver, however, apparently ignored the order, accelerating and attempting to flee into the streets of the eastern part of the capital.

A second police unit joined the chase, but later lost visual contact with the vehicle. State Police officers continued to monitor the vehicle while maintaining a safe distance.

The crash and the victims

The race ended dramatically at Via Collatina, when the fleeing car suddenly crossed into the oncoming lane. The head-on impact with another vehicle was devastating.

Two family members died instantly amid the wreckage, while the third passenger died shortly afterward despite lifesaving efforts. First responders encountered a dramatic scene, with the vehicles completely destroyed by the impact.

The three fugitives arrested

Three South American men were traveling in the getaway car and were arrested on very serious charges: vehicular homicide, resisting a public official, violating their duties to officials and officers, and carrying burglary-resistant objects.

During the search of the vehicle, investigators seized several screwdrivers and a jammer, a device used to disrupt electronic signals, evidence that supports the theory of criminal activity occurring prior to the search.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to extract the victims from the wreckage, along with paramedics from the 118 emergency medical service and law enforcement, who are conducting technical surveys and a detailed reconstruction of the incident. The investigation is now focusing on each phase of the chase to determine responsibilities and the timing of the intervention.
