A sprawl of abandoned car carcasses on bare ground, with potentially dangerous fluids and components long exposed to the elements. This is the scene encountered by the Carabinieri of the Giffoni Valle Piana Forestry Unit, along with officers from the Montecorvino Pugliano station, during a check in the municipality of Salerno.

The military identified a private area of approximately 850 square meters that had been effectively transformed into an illegal vehicle dump. The land contained approximately fifty vehicles, many of which were clearly abandoned and still had mechanical parts containing potentially polluting substances. The presence of oil, fuel, and other liquids left in the vehicles, left in direct contact with the soil for extended periods, posed a real risk of soil and subsoil contamination.

Not only that, the conditions in which the vehicles were found could also have increased the risk of fire, further exacerbating the potential environmental hazard. During the investigation, it was also discovered that one of the vehicles in the area was stolen.

At the end of the operation, the Carabinieri seized the entire property and reported the owner of the lot at large. He is charged with unauthorized waste disposal and receiving stolen goods. Investigations are continuing to determine the origin of the other vehicles and determine any additional responsibilities.
