The autopsy took place this afternoon at the Secondo Policlinico in Naples and lasted approximately three hours. Twenty-five experts and consultants participated in the technical panel, confirming the sensitive nature of the case, which has shocked public opinion.
Domenico Caliendo died on February 21st at the Monaldi Hospital in Naples, after undergoing a heart transplant. An investigation has been opened into the matter to determine any liability and verify every stage of the procedure.
The coroner: "A cut to the ventricle has been ruled out."
At the end of the examination, coroner Luca Scognamiglio, a consultant appointed by the child's parents, revealed a significant initial finding: no heart damage was found during the removal process.
"In particular," he explained, "there doesn't appear to be the cut on the ventricle that some sources had mentioned." He was referring to statements made in the witness statements that suggested possible damage to the organ before the transplant.
Scognamiglio specified that macroscopic lesions to the heart chambers have been ruled out, calling the possibility of a cut during removal "questionable." Final conclusions, however, will need to await further investigation.
New college on April 28
The panel of experts will meet again on April 28th. At that time, they will analyze the pathological findings collected during the autopsy. Only after examining the samples will it be possible to obtain a more complete picture of the cause of death.
The family consultant emphasized the quality of the appointed panel, describing it as a "very high-level" group and reiterating his confidence in the experts' work.
