Naples – She's holding the hands of her two children, aged 4 and 7, as she walks calmly through one of the city's busiest squares. A moment of distraction and a violent tug snatches her phone. The victim of a quick robbery, carried out with unexpected ferocity before her little ones' eyes.

The pickpocket technique

It happened yesterday afternoon in the Piazza Garibaldi area, the beating heart and crossroads of the city's myriad histories. The woman was walking along the sidewalk when a man, an Algerian national, deftly approached her. With a swift and violent movement, he snatched the cell phone from her hands, taking advantage of the victim's momentary physical inferiority, as she was busy watching over her two children.

The immediate reaction of the Local Police

On the scene, however, the robber's bad luck met with the promptness of law enforcement. Officers from the Environmental Investigation and Social Emergencies Unit of the Naples Local Police, on patrol in the area, witnessed the scene or were immediately alerted. Within seconds, they reached and subdued the criminal, who tried in vain to break free and resist.

Speedy trial and conviction

Taken to the police station, the man was identified and placed under arrest. He faces serious charges: aggravated robbery (committed with violence and in the presence of minors under 14) and resisting a public officer.

The justice system immediately shifted into high gear: the arrested man was tried this morning in a fast-track trial before the Court of Naples. The judge validated the arrest and sentenced him to two years and four months in prison.

The fate of the attacker: repatriation

The sentence doesn't end with detention. In the same ruling, the Court also ordered the additional measure of forced deportation to his country of origin. A direct flight has already been arranged for the Algerian man, who will return to his homeland once he has served his sentence or, in any case, following expulsion proceedings.
