Benevento – A new, extraordinary chapter in Roman history has resurfaced in Campania. Along the ancient Appian Way, in the area of Apollosa (Benevento), an imposing Roman funerary monument has been unearthed, adorned with rare and fascinating depictions of gladiatorial scenes.

The discovery, coordinated by the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Caserta and Benevento, adds a fundamental piece to our understanding of the social and urban dynamics that animated the "Regina Viarum" at the dawn of the Empire.

The intuition after the flood

The discovery wasn't triggered by a traditional, planned excavation campaign, but by the watchful eye of a citizen and the power of nature. It was volunteer Marco Zamparelli who first noticed some unusual stone blocks, exposed from the mud following the recent flooding of the Serrentella stream.

His timely notification allowed archaeologists to intervene immediately. Under the guidance of official Simone Foresta and a team of specialists, approximately twenty large limestone blocks have been recovered so far, and the entrance to an evocative burial chamber decorated with frescoes has been identified.

The identikit: the tomb of a gladiator "manager"

But who rested in this monumental structure? Preliminary studies outline the profile of a man of absolute prominence in Augustan society (early 1st century AD). The monument, which originally would have dominated the landscape with an estimated diameter of about twelve meters, testifies not only to the deceased's enormous wealth but also suggests his profession.

The sculptural decorations depicting combat scenes indicate that the man was closely linked to the organization of the famous and bloody gladiatorial games. The choice to locate the mausoleum right on the Appian Way, in a strategic location between ancient Caudium and Montesarchio, was no coincidence: it was a perfect showcase to display his power and status to travelers on Rome's most important artery.

Towards the future: protection and virtual reality

The details of the operation were presented to the local community during the conference "A Construction Site to Discover the Appian Way." This dissemination event was organized by Superintendent Mariano Nuzzo to highlight the importance of the connection between citizens and their historical heritage, describing the find as being of exceptional architectural and iconographic value.

Now the challenge shifts to development. The Municipality of Apollosa has already announced its intention to include the area in territorial promotion projects related to the Appian Way, working in synergy with the Campania Region.

Meanwhile, the precious blocks saved from the floods have been secured at the Superintendency's Operations Center in Benevento (where they can be visited by appointment). For the future, the institutions are already dreaming big: a 3D virtual reconstruction project is underway to allow everyone to admire the gladiators' tomb in its majestic original form.
