Nola– A long, heartbreaking applause broke the silence of a packed Piazza Duomo as Domenico Caliendo's small white coffin emerged from Nola Cathedral. It was a farewell marked by the contrast between the tenderness of the white balloons, released to the tune of Marco Mengoni's "Guerriero," and the cries of outrage calling for truth in a death that has shaken the entire country.
"Justice, justice!" and "Whoever made the mistake will pay," the crowd shouted, voicing their grief over the loss of the two-and-a-half-year-old boy, who died at the Monaldi Hospital in Naples after a heart transplant compromised by a fatal error in the cold chain.
The homily and the call to humility
During the celebration, the Bishop of Nola, Monsignor Francesco Marino, spoke harshly about human error and professional responsibility. "If we can all make mistakes, this painful event must teach us the humility to never feel omnipotent, even when we are highly competent," the prelate warned. A direct reference to the clinical tragedy: "Only the Lord works miracles; when we feel too sure of ourselves, we become fallible."
On the coffin, a T-shirt with the words "Ciao Mimmo" testified to the affection of a community that rallied around his parents, Antonio and Patrizia. Also present in the Cathedral pews was Napoli footballer Pasquale Mazzocchi, who personally embraced the family at the end of the service.
A composure that questions Italy
Despite the outrage in the streets, the Caliendo family attended the funeral with a dignified silence that deeply touched those present. Father Raffaele Afiero, parish priest of the Church of Maria Santissima della Stella, emphasized this aspect to LaPresse: "The family has endured this immense grief with great composure. From Mother Patrizia comes a lesson in life consistent with the faith for all of Italy."
As the balloons ascended into the sky, the investigation into the preservation and transportation of the organ remains open, seeking answers to the call for justice that shook the walls of Nola Cathedral today.
