Salerno - Last night, the roads of Cilento were the scene of a fatal tragedy. In Montecorice, in the province of Salerno, a horrific accident claimed the lives of Michele Pirozzi, 29, and Maria Magliocco, 24.
The young couple were returning to Agnone Cilento after an evening spent together when their Volkswagen Polo plunged about two hundred meters down a cliff, landing among the rocks and waves. There was no hope of survival for the two young people: they died instantly.
The dynamics of the crash
According to initial reports, the two boys' small car was traveling along a narrow, dark stretch of road when it collided with a Citroen van. Following the impact, the Polo lost traction, crashed through the guardrail, and plummeted into the distance.
The driver of the commercial vehicle was a pastry chef returning home from work. The man, who suffered only minor injuries, was treated by emergency medical services and immediately subjected to routine alcohol and drug tests, which he tested negative for.
His position, however, remains under investigation by the Carabinieri of the Agropoli company's operational section, coordinated by Commander Giuseppe Colella, who are tasked with reconstructing the exact dynamics and responsibilities for the accident.
Thrown from the cockpit: the difficult search in the dark
The car's fall was devastating. It rolled several times down the steep rock face before becoming irreparably stuck in the cliff. The force of the impact threw Michele and Maria's bodies from the vehicle.
Finding the couple required hours of exhausting searches conducted in darkness and danger. The wreck, completely destroyed, was finally located by sea thanks to the intervention of a Coast Guard patrol boat from Agropoli, under the coordination of Lieutenant Vincenzo Chetta.
Even the brother of one of the victims took part in the search operations, joining the rescuers aboard a fishing boat, in the desperate hope of finding them.
Recovery by sea
The geographical characteristics of the accident site made it impossible to reach the victims by land. A massive rescue effort was mobilized: the SAF (Speleo Alpino Fluviale) firefighters responded to the scene, supported by a helicopter to fly over the area and a crane brought in specifically from Salerno.
The final recovery operations for the bodies were entrusted to divers from the Naples Fire Department, who had to operate directly from the sea. The entire local community is now in shock over the loss of the two boys. Michele was well-established in the local workforce: he worked as a driver for a company in Capaccio-Paestum specializing in hay bale transport for local livestock.

This news leaves me speechless. It all seems so confusing to me. The road is narrow and half dark, but it's not clear who made the mistake. The rescuers did what they could, but the car fell down and the bodies were badly damaged. Let's hope the police clarify the situation.
What a tragedy! I don't know what to say. The road was narrow and dark, and there weren't enough headlights; the guardrail was perhaps old or poorly secured. More stringent checks and maintenance are needed on all coastal roads. I'm sorry for the families, but we shouldn't accuse without knowing; the investigations will reveal the truth of the matter.
