Santa Maria Capua Vetere – A suspicious bulge in his uniform just as he was about to begin duty ended the career of Alessandro Mauro, 57, assistant chief of the Penitentiary Police at the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison. He was arrested in flagrante delicto on charges of possession with intent to distribute narcotics.

The order was validated by the preliminary investigations judge of the Sammarinese court, Marzia Pellegrino, who ordered the man to be placed under house arrest.

The highlighter trick

The operation began at the end of last week, during the usual afternoon shift change. It was his colleagues who noticed something was amiss: an unusual package in his uniform pockets prompted the officers to investigate further. The search uncovered an ingenious ruse: Mauro was hiding seven highlighters, each with spaces cut out to conceal three cellophane wrappers. In total, nearly 50 grams of hashish were seized.

A subsequent search of the officer's barracks room revealed further incriminating evidence. Although no other drugs were found, colleagues discovered:

Four micro-cell phones complete with SIM and charger, ready for delivery;

Over 1.500 euros in cash;

Several "pizzini" with annotations are still being examined by investigators.

The defense does not convince the judge

When pressed, the 57-year-old attempted to defend himself, providing a version of events that the judicial authorities dismissed as "unreliable." The assistant chief stated that he had received the package from the father of an inmate, but maintained that he didn't know its contents and that he had to hand it over to a third officer, whose name he couldn't (or wouldn't) reveal.

Investigations are continuing to determine whether this incident was an isolated incident or part of a broader scheme to infiltrate illicit material into the Caserta prison.

I'm shocked by this news, but the full details are still unknown; this motivation is complex. My colleagues were right to check because they saw a bulge in the division, yet the defense seems credible but unconvincing. Perhaps there are larger underlying issues to clarify and a lot of confusion.

I read the article and it seems like a strange story, but I don't know how to judge it. The facts seem serious but also confusing. Is the defense not convincing? Perhaps, but colleagues should have checked better. The package seems strange. There are too many questions: who gave the package? Why no name? The investigation will have to clarify everything, but the money and cell phones speak volumes.
