Naples – A psychiatric inmate attempts suicide in Secondigliano prison: he is saved by a prison officer.
It almost happened again, but this time a prison officer intervened in time to save the inmate who was attempting to hang himself. The incident occurred yesterday.
The news was announced by USPP President Giuseppe Moretti and Regional Secretary Ciro Auricchio, who, on behalf of the entire union, expressed "satisfaction with the actions of the officer whose intervention saved a life, once again confirming the high level of training and spirit of selflessness that distinguishes the penitentiary police staff at Secondigliano prison on a daily basis."

The episode, however, once again brings to the fore the long-standing issue of psychiatric inmates and the inadequacy of prison facilities. "It cannot be ignored that psychiatric inmates continue to represent a critical and urgent situation in the penitentiary system, an emergency exacerbated by the lack of adequate facilities, specialized personnel, and appropriate treatment options," said union representatives Moretti and Auricchio, who are calling for intervention by the regional health authority.
"These inmates should be taken care of by the regional health system and not left in prison without support tools. They reiterate that the closure of the OPGs was a clear mistake, certifying the failure of the REMS, which have long waiting lists and few places," they conclude.
