Law enforcement's crackdown on workplace safety has not spared even the historic sites of the Upper Caserta area. Yesterday, Carabinieri officers from the Santa Maria Capua Vetere Company, supported by specialists from the Caserta Labor Inspectorate, combed through several construction sites between San Prisco and Portico di Caserta. The operation has resulted in a significant number of complaints, suspensions of operations, and administrative fines totaling more than €15.000.

The first intervention involved a particularly sensitive site, the one operating near the Roman Mausoleum "Carceri Vecchie" on Via Appia, in San Prisco. Here, the military took the sole director of the company responsible for the work into custody. The charges relate to violation of fundamental safety requirements for temporary construction sites. In addition to the complaint, the company was issued fines totaling approximately €1.400.

The situation emerged even more critically during the second inspection conducted in Portico di Caserta. At this construction site, the legal representative landed in trouble for a long list of breaches: from the lack of health surveillance to the complete lack of employee training, to the failure to assess electrical risks and the presence of unprotected floor openings, potential death traps for workers.

The investigation also exposed the scourge of undeclared work. The Carabinieri identified two workers "off the books," immediately imposing fines of over €8.000 and the inevitable suspension of business operations. Adding together the technical and administrative violations, the entrepreneur will have to pay a sum close to €14.000. The competent authorities have been informed by the Carabinieri, who will continue monitoring to ensure compliance with regulations protecting workers' lives.

This seems like important news, but the method of intervention seems a bit confusing. The Carabinieri have carried out inspections at the construction sites, but the motivations and procedural steps are unclear. There are two illegal workers and high fines for the companies. Let's hope they protect the workers and put everything in order.
