Naples – A tragedy paralyzed Line 1 of the Naples Metro for approximately two hours on Sunday afternoon. An 84-year-old man died suddenly on the platform of the Medaglie d'Oro station, struck down – according to initial reports – by a fatal illness while waiting for his train. The alarm was raised around 1:30 PM.

Passengers immediately called for help, and 118 emergency services and a police patrol arrived on the scene. Despite resuscitation efforts, nothing could be done for the elderly man. He was pronounced dead at the scene. To allow for the necessary investigations and the removal of the body, Line 1 was temporarily closed on the affected section, causing unavoidable inconvenience to thousands of riders.

The suspension affected approximately two hours of service before the subway could resume normal service. Currently, there are no indications of causes other than a sudden illness. The police have conducted routine checks, while the judicial authorities have ordered a medical examiner's examination.

This episode highlights the vulnerability of older people in public spaces and the disruption that sudden events can cause to an already strained transport network like Naples's.

I feel sorry for the man; it's sad and highlights the fragility of older people, but also the limitations of the subway system. Emergency services arrived, but they couldn't save him. Perhaps there should have been more checks and more staff, also to avoid the inconvenience that strands passengers for hours.
