Antonio Conte will meet with inmates at Poggioreale tomorrow: sport is redemption, even behind bars.
The Italian champion coach will discuss responsibility, rules, and second chances. The university's project aims to transform prison into a laboratory of awareness.
Naples – Antonio Conte is preparing to enter the Giuseppe Salvia prison in Poggioreale tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. The Napoli coach, fresh from winning the club's fourth Scudetto, will be the featured speaker at the "Pensieri di Libertà" (Freedom Thoughts) seminar series promoted by the Department of Law at the University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli" (running until July 15, 2026).
Sport as a tool for inclusion
The initiative, already underway for some time, aims to build a bridge between the academic world, prominent figures in civil society, and prisoners. The goal is to use diverse languages—from art to philosophy, from sport to science—to foster reflection and personal growth. Conte's speech will focus on the social and civic value of sport, understood as a vehicle for discipline, responsibility, and individual redemption, even in challenging contexts like prison.
The University: "Knowledge becomes a tool for change"
"The program was created to offer inmates a structured space for dialogue, where knowledge isn't just abstract but becomes a real tool for growth," explains Raffaele Picaro, director of the Department of Law at Unicampania. "Each meeting is designed as a moment of exchange, with the direct involvement of teachers and students, to restore education to an active role in the rehabilitation process."
After institutional greetings from prison director Giulia Russo and Picaro himself, the event will be introduced by Professor Giuliano Balbi, Professor of Criminal Law and the project's scientific director. The program includes five thematic, progressive, and coherent events, leading participants to a broader reflection on the relationship between the individual, society, and responsibility.
From sport to law: VAR under scrutiny
The university's focus on the world of soccer is nothing new: the Department of Law has established the first Italian university chair in the Legality of the Rules of the Game of Soccer, headed by Professor Guido Clemente di San Luca. Another important event fits into this context: on April 22nd, at 2:30 pm, in Room I of Palazzo Melzi in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, a meeting entitled "The VAR Protocol: Who is on Trial? The Legal Framework, Its Interpretation and Application" will be held, featuring Gianluca Aureliano, an international VAR referee.
Third mission in prison
"Pensieri di Libertà" is part of the university's Third Mission activities and represents a concrete example of collaboration with the prison administration. This ongoing project demonstrates how prison can become a place of awareness and personal reconstruction, focusing on the value of knowledge as a lever for change and inclusion.
