The Anti-Mafia Investigative Directorate (DIA) has executed a significant seizure of assets, worth over €2 million, against high-profile criminals linked to the Casalesi clan. The orders, issued by the Preventive Measures Section of the Court of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, stem from proposals jointly put forward by the Naples Public Prosecutor and the Director of the DIA (Anti-Mafia Investigation Department).
The public works entrepreneur
The first measure targets a well-known construction contractor, considered a longtime affiliate and who over time became a sort of monopolist in the marble, porphyry, and road construction materials sectors. Already convicted definitively in the "Spartacus" maxi-trial and under investigation again in 2022, the man was found to have close ties to the Schiavone faction.
Through a complex network of "Chinese box" companies, he won public and private contracts, simultaneously laundering and reinvesting illicit capital. In these operations, he was supported by a close relative, also the recipient of today's asset order.
The clan's political mediator
A second strand of the operation involved another longtime member of the Caserta clan, a key figure in extortion and the reinvestment of illicit proceeds. The investigation revealed how the suspect, following orders from imprisoned leaders, acted as a true "glue" between the criminal organization and local politics.
Specifically, he acted as the right-hand man of a former councilor of the Municipality of Casal di Principe, who often turned out to be the most voted candidate in local elections.
The assets ended up under lock and key
The complex financial investigations revealed a clear disproportion between the declared income and the actual financial resources of the individuals involved. The San Marino court therefore placed a lien on four companies, five properties, two vehicles, and 24 financial accounts, dealing yet another severe blow to the economic interests of organized crime.

This seems like important news to me, but I don't understand why the controls didn't work before, and the companies and assets seemed to be intertwined in a complicated way. The judiciary still needs to explain better how these flows of money and political ties were permitted.
