A mechanical workshop transformed into an uncontrolled hazardous waste dump. This was discovered by the Carabinieri Forestry Corps during a raid on April 8th in Portico di Caserta, which led to the arrest of the business owner, a 56-year-old from Marcianise.

The man is charged with illegal management of hazardous special waste, unauthorized mixing, and illegal disposal of wastewater. According to the police's reconstruction, the check took place in the yard outside the workshop, where the owner was allegedly caught depositing materials from car refinishing operations next to piles of hazardous waste.

The inspection revealed widespread environmental degradation: mercury fluorescent tubes abandoned on the ground, bags containing contaminated filter materials, damaged car parts such as windshields, metal and plastic parts, as well as packaging soaked in used oil. Additional hazardous waste was found in several locations throughout the yard, along with a car engine lying directly on the pavement and contaminated with oily substances.

According to the investigations, all the material was found to be improperly classified and stored without any separation by category, in violation of environmental regulations. The owner also failed to provide the required documentation relating to waste management, such as registers, forms, and registration in the tracking system.

According to the inspections, the yard was authorized exclusively for vehicle parking and not for the storage of waste materials. Technical personnel from the regional environmental protection agency, responsible for waste characterization, also intervened during the operations.

The irregular management of stormwater was also alleged: runoff water from the yard, contaminated by waste, was allegedly channeled into the sewer system without any treatment. Following the raid, the entire outdoor area of the workshop, covering approximately 700 square meters, was seized, along with the materials found. The owner was arrested and handed over to the judicial authorities.

I don't understand how they allowed the workshop to become a waste dump. The checks were not done properly; the registers were missing and the bags were mixed up without separation. Used oil was spilled on the yard, and neon lights and windows were broken. This is a serious matter, but it seems that no one is doing anything about it.
