Rome – The final word comes late Friday afternoon, closing one of the most dramatic chapters in Rome's recent crime news. The Court of Cassation has finalized the 10-year, 11-month, and 25-day sentence for Gabriele Natale Hjorth, accused of anomalous complicity in the murder of Carabinieri Deputy Brigadier Mario Cerciello Rega, which occurred in the Prati neighborhood in July 2019.
The judges of the First Criminal Section rejected the appeal filed by the young American's lawyers, upholding the decision of the Third Appeals Trial last July. Only one small technical issue remains: a annulment with a referral limited to the civil effects only regarding the aggravating circumstance of the victim and his colleague Andrea Varriale's qualification as public officials.
The Night of Blood in Prati
The incident dates back to the night between July 25 and 26, 2019. What was supposed to be a negotiation for the recovery of a stolen backpack (the so-called "return horse") following a failed drug deal in Trastevere, turned tragic. On Via Pietro Cossa, Cerciello Rega and his colleague Varriale intervened in plainclothes; a fight ensued, during which Finnegan Lee Elder stabbed the deputy sergeant 11 times. Hjorth, despite not having drawn the weapon, was charged with actively participating in the fight with Varriale and helping Elder hide the knife.
The labyrinth of processes
The trial process was characterized by a series of sentences that progressively reduced the initial penalties:
The First Degree (2021): Both young Americans were sentenced to life in prison.
The Appeal (2022): The sentences were reduced to 24 years for Elder and 22 years for Hjorth.
The first Court of Cassation (2023): The judges overturned the sentences and remanded them. Elder was asked to reconsider the aggravating circumstances, while Hjorth was asked to reevaluate his responsibility for complicity in murder.
The second appeal (2024): Elder received a sentence of 15 years and 2 months (which later became definitive), while for Hjorth the sentence was drastically reduced to 11 years and 4 months.
The third appeal (2025): Today's sentence (10 years and 11 months) was determined after a further referral by the Supreme Court on the calculation of the penalty.
The last act
With today's decision, Natale Hjorth's criminal case is solidified. The Attorney General's Office had requested the appeal be dismissed since morning, arguing that the punishment established in the final instance was appropriate. Nearly seven years after the events, the Italian justice system has closed the criminal case against both protagonists of that tragic night, leaving behind a trail of controversy and pain that has profoundly affected the public and the Carabinieri.
