Chiara Jaconis case: Judgement requested for 13-year-old's parents

The Naples Public Prosecutor's Office has requested the indictment of the parents of the 13-year-old boy believed by investigators to be involved in the incident that led to the death of Chiara Jaconis, a tourist from Padua who was struck by a statuette thrown from a height in the Spanish Quarter on September 15, 2024.

According to the prosecution's case, the two parents are charged with conspiracy to commit manslaughter, in connection with an alleged failure to supervise their minor child. Their positions will be examined by the judge at the preliminary hearing of the Court of Naples on June 26th.

The tragedy in the Spanish Quarters

The events date back to the afternoon of September 15, 2024, when Chiara Jaconis was in Naples as a visitor. According to the investigative reconstruction, the woman was struck by a figurine thrown from a balcony in an area of ​​the Spanish Quarter.

The impact proved fatal.

The incident caused a strong stir in the city and sparked a complex investigation aimed at clarifying the circumstances of the incident and determining any culprits. Investigative investigations focused specifically on the origin of the object and the presence of the minor in the home from which the throw was allegedly made.

The position of the minor

On the judicial level, the 13-year-old boy was acquitted by the Juvenile Court as not incriminating, having not turned 14 at the time of the incident. The decision was adopted with a dismissal of case due to lack of incrimination related to his age.

This is a key step in the investigation, as it defines the assessment of the proceedings against the minor on a strictly legal level, without addressing the merits of a possible determination of criminal responsibility, which is not permitted precisely because of his age.

The parents' line of defense

The boy's parents, through their lawyers, have always maintained their complete innocence. The defense also disputes some aspects of the investigative reconstruction, arguing that the figurine is not their property.

Not only that. The family also demands that their son's situation be clarified on the merits, not just in terms of his age. For this very reason, they appealed the Juvenile Court's acquittal, believing that a case resolution based solely on non-imputability was insufficient.

The next step in the classroom

The next judicial juncture will be the preliminary hearing on June 26, during which the preliminary hearing judge will have to evaluate the prosecutor's request and decide whether or not to order the minor's parents to stand trial.
The investigation therefore remains open on two tracks: on the one hand the accusation levelled against the parents for alleged failure to supervise, on the other the defence front which continues to reject all charges and to ask for full clarification on the entire affair.
