Castello di Cisterna – A night of lead and blood in the Neapolitan hinterland. An armed commando, the smell of gunpowder, and a trail of violence that connected, in a single night, the streets of Castello di Cisterna to those of Acerra. The hitmen's sights targeted a prominent figure in the local criminal landscape, a clear sign of new and dangerous shifts in the balance of power in the province's criminal underworld.
The ambush at Cisternina
The raid took place in the dead of night in Castello di Cisterna, behind the infamous "Cisternina" public housing complex, a long-standing drug trafficking stronghold and hub for illicit business. The victim, Tommaso Rega, 37, was targeted by a commando unit that flanked him while he was inside his car.
The killers fired with intent to kill: a bullet struck him in the shoulder, piercing his chest and ending just inches from his heart. Rescued and rushed to the Villa dei Fiori clinic in Acerra, the 37-year-old was later transferred to Cardarelli Hospital in Naples, where he is currently hospitalized in what doctors consider to be serious, though not life-threatening, conditions.
The Rega criminal dynasty
Tommaso Rega's surname weighs heavily on the Anti-Mafia investigation. The 37-year-old is, in fact, the namesake nephew of the area's historic boss, Tommaso Rega, known as "o' chirichiello," who was arrested in 2018 in a massive Carabinieri raid for extortion and mafia-related crimes. Furthermore, the injured man is the son of Giovanni Rega, known in criminal circles as "Coscia storta," who is also currently in prison.
For decades, the Rega clan has been the protagonist of bloody feuds for control of the racket and the lucrative drug dealing areas in a hot axis that links Castello di Cisterna to nearby Brusciano, historically clashing with rival cartels such as the Egizio and Esposito-Palermo clans.
The State's response and the Prefect's warning
Faced with the escalation of violence, the authorities responded immediately. The prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, ordered an immediate intensification of surveillance and control of the territory by all police forces.
The goal is to secure the area with high-impact operations, strategic checkpoints, and active patrols in the most crime-prone areas. Security is at a high level: last night's bloody events will be the focus of the next Provincial Committee for Public Order and Security, urgently convened for April 13th.

Bad and worrying news. We hear that the situation is serious, but the authorities haven't responded immediately. The prefect has provided words but few actions, and checks aren't enough. The Cisternina neighborhood still seems under siege. We hope the police will make more of an effort and block the squares.
